Windshields and Rear View Mirrors

“Our yesterdays present irreparable things to us; it is true that we have lost opportunities which will never return, but God can transform this destructive anxiety into a constructive thoughtfulness for the future. Let the past sleep, but let it sleep on the bosom of Christ. Leave the Irreparable Past in His hands, and step out into the Irresistible Future with Him.” Oswald Chambers

My chosen word for 2012 was trust and I was given ample opportunity to exercise that trust. Illness early in the year followed by two surgeries and then loss of power in my home due to faulty wiring challenged me to trust God as there was no where else to go. He proved faithful and met each of those needs. I learned to Trust in the Lord with all my heart and to not lean on my own understanding. In all my ways I acknowledged Him and He made my paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6) Today I read about a word coined by JRR Tolkien that truly spoke to me. Eucatastrophe meaning the joyful (eu) catastrophe. Tolkien used it to describe “the sudden happy turn in a story which pierces you with a joy that brings tears”. That word explains why I can leave a year behind that had catastrophe in it but be joyful. I shed tears of joy for how Christ brought me through and met all of my needs despite the circumstances. With all that in mind I choose my word for 2013…Possibilities…

The dictionary defines possibilities as capacity for favorable development; potential. HMMM sounds positive for a new year word. There are certainly things in my life to be anxious for as I begin this year. I received my first paycheck of the new year yesterday and found it $15.00 less than the last one thanks to the social security tax being increased. My already pathetic check is now really, really pathetic. What else is going to happen financially as this fiscal cliff hangs over us? That is not for me to worry about. There is a reason that windshields are bigger than rear view mirrors. To look forward more than backward. I am trusting in the One who brought me through the trials of 2012. I am leaving the Irreparable Past in His hands and am now stepping into the Irresistible Future with Him.
